Creative Metamorphosis: Surface Design Techniques on Textiles

Printing with ink, scavenging, hand-stitching and composing collages will lead each maker to countless opportunities to explore their unique, artistic vision.

Every session builds on the first one.

Day 1: Block Printing with Traditional Indian Blocks and Natural Objects. 

As a way to connect with nature, we will scavenge as a group for interesting leaves to include in our work. Participants can anticipate printing on paper and cloth with permanent textile ink to explore their own creative voice. We will also discuss printing on garments to give them a new life and add visual interest.

Students should plan to bring aprons and/or clothes that they deem appropriate for painting. Brayers will be available to use during class only.

Day 2: Meditative Hand-Stitches

As a sustainable practice, hand-stitching ranks supreme. It is portable, universal and a life long skill. It is also an artful technique that produces the most beautiful textures and draws our complete attention to a rhythmic and mindful task. In this session we will utilize the printed textiles and use the shapes to inspire our stitching journey, much like objects on a map, with running, echo stitches. The goal is never perfection. I hope that by end of this workshop, participants will look to hand-stitching as a source of inspiration and a way to mend our garments. 

Day 3: An Introduction to Small Textile Collages

We will use improvisation and raw edge hand-stitching to create small, free-form stitch collages, that are true to the maker’s vision and compliments sustainable living. Every stitch is imbued with memory and the goal is to create with Intention over perfection, let the mind wander. Using composition and color play will help us convey our unique artistic voices. Your collage may be abstract or realistic, it may in addition contain found objects, you choose. Your kit will include a variety of textile substrates to add texture and dimension.

Students need to bring scissors, and fabric pins.

Maday is a prolific art educator, Janome America Artisan,  published artist  and magazine contributor, based in the Midwest, USA, committed to bringing innovation and artistry to the forefront of her work. She is also passionate about creating natural spaces the whole community can enjoy.

Her mission is to nurture artistic platforms across cultures and generations to foster inclusive, creative work, while finding ways to minimize environmental footprint.
