November 11 - 17, 2019

Instructor: Michael Schael

Wood Fire workshop fee: $350

Meals: $135 Lunch and dinner

Lodging: $210

Total workshop: $695

Instructor: Michael Schael

Join Michael Schael, a wood-firing veteran of 25 years, for an Anagama wood firing! This wood-fire workshop will focus on the interaction of flame, clay and glaze. We will play with various stacking techniques and learn how glazes react to high temperature for a long period of time.

Participants are encouraged to show up on Monday, November 11, if they want to glaze their work. Adamah will provide 4 glazes: Yellow Salt, Tenmoku, Seafoam Blue and some shinos. Participants are encouraged to bring their own cone 10 glazes to use and share with others.

Loading the Anagama will begin Tuesday, November 12 and should take 2-3 days to complete.  All pots should be on the tables and shelves next to the kiln by midmorning of the 12th. This makes loading easier and also ensures that each participant gets pots into each of the different zones within the kiln.

The firing will begin as soon as the kiln is loaded and the doorway is bricked up. We will work in teams of 2 during for shifts 4 hours and fire for 2-3 days around the clock. My desire is to get up to cone 9/@2300F in 30 hours and then slow the kiln down. For the next 10-30 hours, we will slowly increase the temperature to cone 11/@2400 F until we decide the firing is over.

Unloading will take place the following weekend, November 23 or 24, depending on the preference of the participants. We will unload and set all the pots on pallets in the order that they come out of the kiln.  This enables the participants to see all the work as one firing and to see how pots reated in each “zone” of the kiln. Unloading also include cleaning the kiln and its surroundings as well as grinding and kiln washing all the kiln shelves.  Everyone is required to participate.

Wood-firing is a strenuous method of firing which includes lifting and moving of 3-foot pieces of wood, exposure to hot temperatures (it is important to stay hydrated!) and some disrupted sleep cycles… but, it is well worth the effort!
