Steven Hill’s workshop is about throwing, trimming and assembling tableware. The major focus will be plates, bowls, mugs, tumblers and cups. If time allows he will consider other serving items.
Successful dinnerware requires some precision in throwing and trimming, but we will explore ways to soften and liven the forms through subtle manipulation of the clay.
The use of absorbent bats for plates greatly facilitates throwing and trimming and for this workshop they are a requirement. My recommendation is to bring 4-6, 12” Hydro Bats. They have rubber grommets that accommodate use with bat pins. Also, sharp trimming tools are extremely beneficial and I recommend Dolan Tools #511 and 512.
This workshop is structured for the potter with basic throwing skills. Our goal is to make and bisque at least 4 sample place settings this week. If you would like to follow through glazing and firing your dinnerware you should consider signing up for the following week at Adamah: “Gestural Throwing / Atmospheric Effects for Electric Firing,” July 14-19.
